Morphological differences and migration patterns of greater and lesser snow geese in New York State

چکیده

Lesser (Chen caerulescens caerulescens, LSGO) and greater snow goose atlantica, GSGO) populations have increased substantially in the past 50 years. The light conservation order established 1998 (Canada) 1999 (U.S.) aimed to increase harvest stabilize because breeding ground abundance was thought negatively impact arctic ecosystems. In Atlantic flyway, where LSGO GSGO are both available for harvest, techniques differentiate sub-species field using morphology may be helpful management mid-continent ~16 times more abundant than (n < 1,000,000). We investigated percentages spatial distribution of spring NY as this information could useful population decisions. developed a discriminant function analysis (DFA) heads from geese harvested during 2016 2018 were able between with 95.5% accuracy. Based on DFA results, we estimated that New York state 80% 20% LSGO. Using band recoveries autumn harvests, also identified occurred farther west 2010s prior two decades. Our results indicate comprise most provide evidence shift migration patterns since 1990s.

Body Size and Fecundity in Lesser Snow Geese

Davies et al. (1988) concluded that body size did not directly influence annual fecundity in Lesser Snow Geese (Chen c. caerulescens, hereafter called Snow Geese). This disagrees with Ankney and Macinnes (1978) who showed that there was a positive correlation between culmen length and body mass in prelaying female Snow Geese, and that heavier females laid more eggs than did lighter females. A r...

Nutrient Reserves and Reproductive Performance of Female Lesser Snow Geese

--We studied the relation between nutrient reserves and reproductive performance of female Lesser Snow Geese (Chen caerulescens caerulescens) in 1971 and 1972 at the McConnell River (60ø50'N, 94ø25'W), Northwest Territories, Canada. We determined the potential clutch size of a pre-laying female by counting large (>20 mm), highly vascularized ovarian follicles; actual clutch size of post-laying ...

Neckband Retention for Lesser Snow Geese in the Western Arctic

Neckbands are commonly used in waterfowl studies (especially geese) to identify individuals for determination of movement and behavior and to estimate population parameters. Substantial neckband loss can adversely affect these research objectives and produce biased survival estimates. We used capture, recovery, and observation histories for lesser snow geese (Chen caerulescens caerulescens) ban...

Molt Migration in Relation to Breeding Success in Greater Snow Geese

We describe summer migratory movements by female greater snow geese (Chen caerulescens atlantica) breeding on Bylot Island, Nunavut. We followed 121 radio-collared females between 1997 and 2001 to determine the frequency and timing of their departure from the colony in relation to breeding status, nesting success, and molting chronology. We found that 90% (n = 51) of non-breeders (no nest found...
